Craig Baird Championship Winner 2008
In a record breaking season on the track – and in winning the championship for 2008, Craig Baird (Fitzgerald Racing) has become the first ever two-time Carrera Cup Australia Champion.
Craig opened a commanding lead early in the Championship and remained competitive throughout the season. Having won the Carrera Cup Australia for the second time, and holding the record for most pole positions (15), Craig enjoys the distinction of being one of the best Porsche GT3 Cup drivers in the world.
This is an outstanding result for Fitzgerald Racing – the team has finished in the top 6 in five out of the six seasons. Peter extended his gratitude to the team and sponsors who supported the team's three car field, with Bart Mawer and David Russell all making significant contributions to the overall result.
David Russell secures 3rd place
Dave Russell also finished 3rd in this year’s championship after joining Fitzgerald Racing 2/3 rds of the way through the championship.
Dave took over Peter’s cup car that had had been driven earlier in the year by Andrew Moffat. Dave was able to join Fitzy’s team with the support of Boom Logistics after his previous team went into liquidation and left him without a seat for the remainder of the championship.
Dave immediately qualified on the front row for the last 3 rounds including his first pole which he secured at Bathurst. At his first event racing for the team he had a race win at Phillip Island and also scored 2 x 2nd places at the Gold Coast Indy event.
These results allowed him to secure his 3rd place in the championship. In addition to this Dave finished off the year with the second highest value after Craig Baird in TV exposure for his sponsors. Dave won’t be continuing with the team in 2009 as he has secured a drive in the Fujitsu V8 series and we wish all the best in his endeavors.
